On the Road

Live performance created by traveller dance and Indepen-dance

  • Choreography: Janice Parker and dancers

Funded by Scottish Year of the Artist, Scottish Arts Council and Artlink Edinburgh and the Lothians. Performed Tramway, Glasgow; Shottstown Miners Club, Penicuik; The Brunton, Musselburgh.

“…more than ever before the choreography, devised through group improvisation then shaped and directed by Janice Parker, reflected the individuality and personality of the dancers themselves. The result was a complex mosaic of immensely watch able, expressive dance.

This work was part of Janice’s time as director of Artlink Midlothian between 1998 and 2006. We got this funding partly because it encompassed both a rural and a city location. Creating work between places, and people and organisations is one of Janice’s hallmarks, believing that exchange and dialogue, both verbal and non-verbal, not only creates a third thing that neither group could have created alone, but also is a catalyst for discovery, connection, understanding and cohesion.

Janice collaborated a fair bit with Independen-dance in these early days, in fact, along with choreographer Suz Broughton with music by Chris Benstead, created a piece at the old, now long gone, Glasgow Arts Centre, that was a precursor to the beginnings of the now well established company.
