hand heart head

hand heart head is an eight screen video work produced as a permanent installation for and in collaboration with staff and patients from the Nairn Health Centre and the wider community.

Janice was invited by video artists Simon Fildes and Katrina McPherson who created the concept for hand heart head. The process involved filming short sequences of choreographed and spontaneous hand gestures performed by volunteers of all ages during workshop sessions with Janice.

“A natural rhythm emerges from editing these simple movements that vary from meditative gestures to more frenetic action. The artists witnessed how comfortable non-dancers are with expressing themselves with their hands, more than their bodies or faces, as it protects anonymity and participants can overcome any self-consciousness. The work is informed and inspired by ritual gestures in Buddhist meditation practice, our own non-verbal communication and symbolic representations of care through healing hands.”
